Journal Surveys Title

We're giving you - our loyal EE Journal audience - a chance to win one $250.00 Amazon.com gift card or one of five $50.00 Amazon.com gift cards by telling us about your experience with FPGA design tools. It will only take ten minutes of your time and you'll be helping define the next generation of FPGA-related tools. Yep, you'll be able to say "I personally helped shape the evolution of FPGA tool technology." What more could you ever want?

EE Journal is conducting a research study about your overall impressions of various aspects of FPGA design tools. If you use or are familiar with FPGA design tools please take a few minutes to complete our online survey.

Click here to take the survey

And remember, one respondent will be selected to receive a $250.00 gift certificate and five respondents will be selected at random to receive a $50.00 gift certificate for Amazon.com. Just imagine what you would do with one of those gift certificates.

You are receiving this invitation because you checked the little box that said "I am willing to participate in occasional surveys" when you subscribed to EE Journal, FPGA Journal, Embedded Technology Journal, IC Journal, or Journal On Demand. That time has now come. See, it's not so bad, is it?

Okay, that's enough arm-twisting from us. You know what to do.

We're relying on our phones more and more to tell us where we're going. But, while our phones go with us, they're not us, and they have motion that's different from ours. So how can we figure out which motion is us and which isn't? Read ahead to see how simple a problem that's not.

In this week's Fish Fry, Amelia discussses Element14's 2013 Community Awards and helps us decompress from CES. Check it out!

Did you hear that monkeys knocked out power across the whole country of Zambia? You'd know all about it if you were keeping up with us on Fresh Bytes. Check it out! It's our fun feed of fascinating factoids and techy tidbits. Give it a look and let us know what you think.

Thanks as always for reading. We encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments area right below the articles; don't be shy. Or -- get a lively discussion going in the FORUM.

Distinguishing You from Your Phone

by Bryon Moyer

The Holidays can be a challenging time in the US. Particularly for people that don't like shopping, this is not a favorite time of year. Count a big portion of the male population in that group of hapless souls that gird up their courage and wade into the miasma that is the local mall.

So here you sit, in your car in the mall parking lot, watching the steady stream of people going in empty-handed, coming out loaded with booty. That's your competition. If they buy more than you do, you lose. And if you don't hurry, they're going to buy the cool stuff – and you lose some more.  Read More

Element14's 2013 Community Awards and CES Decompression

by Amelia Dalton

With the Consumer Electronics Show drawing to a close, it's time to reflect and decompress. In this week's Fish Fry, we meditate on the electronic engineering wonders and winners of the 2013 element14 Annual Community Awards with Dianne Kibbey of element14. And, if you're still tense after a solid week in the consumer electronics playground, you are certain to enjoy the soothing waters of PADS board design software. This week, we unveil a whole new way to binge on your favorite Chalk Talk webcasts with the launch of an exciting new series that might make you rethink your board design strategy.

We're giving away a GertBoard (courtesy of Newark element14) to one lucky listener this week! Head on over to element14.com/fishfry to enter to win. Read More

Fryin' up Some Semis with Mike Gianfagna
by Amelia Dalton
In this week's Fish Fry, we're throwing some FR4 on the barbie and frying up a side of silicon -- eSilicon to be exact. My guest is EE Master Chef Mike Gianfagna from eSilicon. Mike always joins Fish Fry around this time of year, and this year we are discussing the state of the semiconductor union: what's keeping us hungry for Moore, and what trends are boiling on high. Also this week, we check out a new crowdsourcing event called "The Iron Man Factory" that could make your dreams (and mine) of a 3D printed Iron Man suit a reality...if they can get Marvel to agree to it.

Alright, Fish Fryers - let's do some visualization. You're wearing some kind of device. It's monitoring your vital signs, it's measuring your activity, and it knows if you've been naughty or nice. What names come to mind? Fitbit? Jawbone? BodyMedia? In this week's Fish Fry, my guest is none other than Ivo Stivoric. He's the former co-founder, CTO, and VP of New Products at BodyMedia, the current Vice President of Research and Development at Jawbone, and a Croatian dancer extraordinaire. Join us, won't you?

Ben Heck, UVM Primer, and Printing with Metal
by Amelia Dalton
The year is drawing to a close, and the snow is falling, but the friday fun is just heatin' up. Our first guest is none other than Ben Heck from element14's wildly popular engineering television series "The Ben Heck Show". Ben gives us an exclusive preview of the next season of "The Ben Heck Show" and lets us in on how he got into this crazy business. Also this week, author Ray Salemi is here to light our way to a special place called UVM land. He's written a new book called "The UVM Primer: A Step-by-Step Introduction to the Universal Verification Methodology" and he's here to break UVM down into its geeky bits and pieces. Finally, we close up this week's Fish Fry with a discussion about some innovative open source plans that could bring 3D metal printing right to your work bench. Saddle up, my friends, the fun is about to begin!

20131129_fishfry Bright Ideas and Big MCUs
by Amelia Dalton
This week's Fish Fry takes on Black Friday* -- no coupons needed, and no standing in line necessary! In honor of today's annual celebration of America's shopping obsession, we go behind-the-scenes to check out the engineering ideas (big and small) that drive this gift-giving season. Dianne Kibbey (element14) rolls in with a shopping cart chock-full of innovation from element14's Smarter Life Challenge, and Rich Hoefle (Microchip Technology) delivers the goods on the world's fastest single-core 32-bit MCUs. (Can you imagine our holiday gift-giving season without MCUs? Neither can I.)
